Our Curriculum

Co-op Academies Trust delivers Initial Teacher Training as part of our PDI "golden thread." As a Lead Partner with Bright Futures SCITT and the University of Derby, we offer a school‑centred programme where you spend most of the year in a Co-op academy alongside structured centre‑based training. We organise the curriculum into three phases—Introductory, Developmental, and Consolidation—taking you from building foundations to refining practice.

What it's like to train in our schools

From day one, you are a valued member of staff, immersed in the routines and relationships of our academies. Your week typically blends teaching, observation, mentor meetings, and study, designed to connect theory with reality.

Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP) blocks give you focused time to rehearse key pedagogy, like establishing routines and scaffolding, before applying them in class. These intensive days ensure that what you learn in training is seamlessly refined in your own practice.

Who we're looking for

We are looking for people committed to our communities and ready to embrace the Trust's Ways of Being Co-op. Our trainees come from diverse backgrounds—from graduates to career changers—but all must show resilience, moral purpose, and a readiness to learn. Academic requirements vary but typically include a degree and GCSEs in English and Maths (plus Science for Primary). Our selection process looks for both the potential to meet Teachers' Standards and a true alignment with the Trust's values.

Entry requirements and subject knowledge

All applicants must meet national ITT criteria, including degree, GCSEs, and safeguarding checks. For secondary subjects, we expect sufficient subject knowledge, though Subject Knowledge Enhancement is available if needed. throughout the year, our curriculum targets subject‑specific pedagogy, supported by mentors and specialists. We encourage you to engage with research and professional networks so you begin your career as a thinking practitioner ready to lead in your subject.

Progression into ECT and beyond

Initial Teacher Training is just the start of the Trust's golden thread. Many trainees move directly into Early Career Teacher roles in Co-op academies, benefiting from our structured early career programme and ongoing mentoring. Over time, you can access National Professional Qualifications and leadership pathways through the PDI. This clear progression helps us attract and develop teachers who are deeply committed to our communities and values.
