Women's History Month 2024

March is Women’s History Month and 8 March was International Women’s Day

"When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. Collectively, let's forge a more inclusive world for women.www.internationalwomensday.com/theme

This year’s #InspireInclusion campaign was to help us create a more inclusive world for women. Through the month, we’ve been sharing features of women in our history who’ve inspired us.

Read more about each of these women below:

We started our campaign with Eliza Brierley!

Did you know Co-op Academy Brierley is named after Eliza? An incredible figure from the co-operative movement!

Eliza was the first female member of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society in March 1846 - before women could even vote or join trade unions!

Clarice Cliff was a ceramic artist who is regarded as one of the most influential ceramicists of the 20th century and is known all around the world.

From Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, she started her career at just 13 years old!

Co-op Academy Clarice Cliff are proudly named after this inspirational woman.

Our 3rd feature was Florence MacWilliams - a famous mathematician who was born in Stoke-on-Trent.

Co-op Academy Florence MacWilliams proudly took their name from Florence, who’s coding contributions made huge progress in coding theory - famously known as the ‘MacWilliams Identity’.

Florence, known as Jessie, was one of the first women to ever publish in this field!

Possibly the most famous of the women we celebrated this March was Florence Nightingale!

Co-op Academy Nightingale is named after the nursing pioneer who’s care for the wounded, and modern hygiene techniques, significantly reduced death during wartimes.

Known as ‘the lady with the lamp’, Nightingale is an icon of Victorian culture.

Our academies got up to lots of different activities to celebrate:
