The experience provides undergraduates interested in teaching a unique paid teaching experience to help them decide if teaching is the right career choice for them.

Interns are paid £300 per-week whilst they gain new skills and insights into the teaching profession.

"Over the 3 weeks, our interns will receive opportunities to immerse themselves within the profession, give them an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher, provide them with the opportunity to work with and teach students, develop their subject and pedagogical knowledge and guide them on applying for initial teacher training.”

Michele Peavoy, AVP Lead of ITT and ECF, Co-op Academy Manchester

What does a Co-op Academies Teaching Internship look like?

A structured programme has been designed to introduce interns to the education profession and key areas of the ITT Core Content Framework. Over the 3 weeks, interns will receive opportunities to immerse themselves within a secondary school context, give them an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher, provide them with the opportunity to work with and teach students and guidance on applying for initial teacher training.

"At Co-op Academies Trust we are looking to develop outstanding teachers who will deliver the best possible education for all of our pupils and students. The Teaching Internship Programme allows us to introduce potential teachers to the profession whilst they are studying and then support them with their continued ‘Get into Teaching’ journey onto our School Based ITT Programme.”

Andy Gibson, Head of Initial Teacher Training, Co-op Academies Trust

All interns will benefit from an evidence-informed package of professional development, delivered by outstanding practitioners and Specialist Leaders of Education SLEs. Areas covered will include:

  • Behaviour, relationships and trust
  • The elements of a successful lesson
  • How pupils learn
  • Adaptive teaching to meet all needs
  • The pastoral role of a teacher and safeguarding
  • Subject and curriculum knowledge

The internship aims to ensure all interns begin to understand what constitutes effective teaching and learning, how to address common misconceptions within their subject, how to plan and deliver a lesson and understanding a multitude of effective teaching strategies and methods.

To help our interns succeed, all will work with a subject mentor who will support them with:

  • how to observe lessons and work as a Teaching Assistant
  • how to plan a successful lesson
  • how to develop relationships with our students
  • how to lead small group intervention
