An inspiring visit to Manchester Traincare Centre on International Women’s Day

Twenty 11-13 year olds, from Co-op Academy Stoke-on-Trent, discovered the diverse range of careers available to young women in the rail industry this International Women’s Day! They travelled with Avanti West Coast to Alstom’s Longsight depot (known as the Manchester Traincare Centre) on Friday 8 March.

Astom (global leader in sustainable mobility) teamed up with Avanti West Coast (rail operator) and rolling stock company Angel Trains as part of their national International Women’s Day initiative - InspiHer. 25 of its UK sites opened their doors to female students, to inspire them to pursue careers in rail, science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

The facility can hold 300 rail vehicles at once - making it the largest of its kind in the country!

The students got to design and build models using a 3D scanner, operate a ‘Leaf-Lift’ to find hidden items and experience maintenance work taking place on a train (just like the one they travelled to the event on).

Linda Dennis, Information Systems and Technology Business Partner UK and Ireland, said of the day:

“It has been truly inspiring to spend the day with students from Co-op Academy Stoke-on-Trent, who impressed us with their curiosity, enthusiasm and potential. Witnessing their engagement with various aspects of the rail industry and seeing their passion for learning about STEM careers reaffirms the importance of initiatives like InspiHer in nurturing the next generation of diverse talent.”

She added:

“We know that there’s still work to be done in breaking down the stereotype that the rail sector is predominantly a career for men. However, my experience has shown me that talent knows no gender and the contributions of women in the rail sector are invaluable. Together, we must continue to challenge outdated perceptions and create a more inclusive industry for all.”
