Ground breaking at Co-op Academy Smithies Moor

Work has officially started on a brand-new, eco-friendly building for Co-op Academy Smithies Moor.

The new school is being built as part of the government’s School Rebuilding Programme, with Bowmer + Kirkland contracted to bring this build to life.

The new school will be full of spaces to help students learn and thrive. Featuring a multi-use games area, a forest school, improved landscaping and biodiversity features, secure cycle parking, and enhanced access arrangements.

Sustainability is a key focus, with the building set to include a biosolar roof and air source heat pumps.

"Today is a really exciting milestone for our school community. Our new school will provide an inspiring environment where every child can learn, thrive and achieve their very best. We can't wait to see our pupils enjoying these fantastic new facilities and creating memories here for many years to come."

Caroline Watkiss, headteacher

Lianne Lawson, contracts manager at Bowmer + Kirkland, added:

"We're delighted to be working with the Department for Education and Co-op Academies Trust to deliver this fantastic new school.

"This project will create a modern, sustainable learning environment for future generations, and we're proud to play our part in bringing this important investment to the local community."

We look forward to sharing more updates as the school begins to take shape!
