GoIT Primary Dragons Den Competition

Co-op Academies Trust recently held the GoIT Competition with primary academies at 1 Angel Square. In partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the project works to broaden the ICT opportunities available to primary pupils!

The challenge was designed to engage pupils in the digital world and look at solutions to common problems in line with the United Nations sustainable development goals. It was fantastic to see future innovators presenting their creative AI solutions.

GoIT is dedicated to teaching students the skills they need to be successful in Tech. With technology being a key part of STEM, we are always keen to upskill pupils, so they have a broader understanding and knowledge of a significant growth sector.

Historically, we know that the number of students, particularly girls, taking Computer Science at GCSE remains lower than many other subjects. Exposing primary pupils to the diverse nature of the subject, and linking it to possible post 16/18 opportunities, aligns with our 22-25 Strategic Plan: 'Co-operating for a fairer world for our communities.’

All career support for our pupils is designed to raise their ambitions. We hope the GoIT challenge will stimulate creativity and curiosity, giving them a glimpse into a key employment sector!

All Year 6 pupils took part in the GoIT challenge during their IT lessons. Each academy selected a winning team and these teams pitched their idea to a panel of judges at Co-op headquarters. The quality of presentations on the day was phenomenal and pupils impressively demonstrated their coding skills and use of AI.

Congratulations to the winning team, Co-op Academy Nightingale, who stood out for being both unique and innovative with their ‘Nature Scan’ app idea. Winning has enabled them to be shortlisted into the Global Innovator of the Year event - goIT's largest competition that highlights the top digital innovators from across 42 participating countries. Nightingale will be one of three UK representatives and will compete virtually against other students globally! A fantastic opportunity that could win them TCS mentorship.

Keela Walsh, Co-op Academy Advisor and one of the judges, said:

“the use of AI throughout the concept was very well thought through and a lot of detail and consideration had clearly  been put into developing their scanning app”

Well done also to runner up, Co-op Academy Woodlands, whose app was based on ‘Clean Water for Everyone’ - another impressive and important pitch.
