Co-op Academy Brierley praised for inclusive culture in first Ofsted inspection

Co-op Academy Brierley is celebrating a positive first Ofsted inspection, with inspectors recognising the school's highly inclusive culture, strong leadership and commitment to helping every pupil thrive.
The Leeds SEND school, which opened in September 2023, achieved a Strong Standard in attendance and behaviour, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. Safeguarding was also found to be effective.
Inspectors highlighted the caring and supportive environment at the school, stating that "pupils are cared for deeply at this school" and that pupils "feel a deep sense of belonging".
The report recognised the impact the school is having on children who may have experienced challenges in education before joining Brierley, noting that pupils quickly feel "safe, welcome and understood" and benefit from an ambitious curriculum tailored to their individual needs.
Inspectors praised the school's inclusive approach, finding that leaders have created "a highly inclusive culture where pupils' needs are identified quickly and accurately". Staff were recognised for their expertise and dedication, with inspectors noting that they have "secure knowledge and confidence to manage pupils' needs skilfully" and work closely with specialists and external agencies to provide comprehensive support.
The calm and positive atmosphere across the school was also highlighted. Inspectors observed that pupils arrive happy, settle quickly and are ready to learn, while staff consistently model positive interactions that help pupils feel secure and supported throughout the school day.
Attendance was recognised as a particular strength, with inspectors noting the school's purposeful approach and the significant improvements made since opening. Behaviour systems were also praised, with positive relationships between staff and pupils at the heart of the school's approach.
The school's work with families was also praised. Inspectors noted the positive relationships built through activities such as coffee mornings, cooking sessions and growing projects. Parents and carers spoke positively about the caring staff, the progress their children make and the warm, welcoming atmosphere across the school community.
Sarah Harridge, Headteacher at Co-op Academy Brierley, said:
"We are incredibly proud of this report and what it says about our school community. Since opening, we have worked hard to create a school where every child feels safe, valued and understood, and where their individual needs are at the centre of everything we do.
"It is particularly pleasing to see inspectors recognise the inclusive culture we have built, the dedication of our staff team and the strong relationships we have with pupils and families. This report reflects the commitment, care and expertise shown by colleagues every day, as well as the resilience and achievements of our wonderful pupils."
Dr Chris Tomlinson, CEO of Co-op Academies Trust, said:
"This is an excellent first Ofsted report for Co-op Academy Brierley and a testament to the outstanding work of Sarah, her team and the wider school community.
"What stands out throughout the report is the deep care, ambition and inclusion that pupils experience every day. Inspectors saw a school where children feel they belong, where their individual needs are understood and where staff are committed to helping every pupil succeed.
"Brierley has grown rapidly since opening and this report reflects the strength of leadership, the expertise of colleagues and the positive impact the school is already having on the lives of children and families across Leeds. We are incredibly proud of everyone involved."
A huge congratulations to Sarah, the staff team, pupils, families and everyone connected with Co-op Academy Brierley on this fantastic achievement!
