Co-op Academy Florence MacWilliams Celebrates Official Opening with Community Gala

Co-op Academy Florence MacWilliams marked its opening this week with a community gala held at its new £32 million campus in Stoke-on-Trent.
Held on Monday 23 February, the celebration brought together more than 60 invited guests to mark the completion of the state-of-the-art secondary school. The academy will ultimately provide 1,150 places for students aged 11-19, significantly enhancing the local education provision.
Guests enjoyed an evening of student musical performances and presentations from key figures behind the project’s development. Speakers included Elizabeth Clewlow, the school’s founding headteacher and Chris Tomlinson, CEO of Co-op Academies Trust. They were joined by Dame Kathryn August, who chaired the Trust Board during the school’s initial proposal stage.
In her address, Ms. Clewlow said: “This evening’s opening gala is a thank you to everyone who has contributed to making this vision a reality. It celebrates our community’s dedication, collaboration and unwavering belief in the power of education.
As the founding headteacher, I feel an immense sense of pride seeing Co-op Academy Florence MacWilliams come to life. Together, we are not just opening the doors to our fabulous state-of-the-art facilities, but opening doors to opportunity, growth and a bright future for every student who walks through them.
The academy welcomed its inaugural Year 7 cohort in September 2024, with students initially taught in temporary accommodation while construction was completed. Since then, it has expanded to include an additional year group and will continue to grow by 180 students annually. Demand is already strong, with a waiting list in place for September, as the school develops under the leadership of Co-op Academies Trust.
The new campus provides modern, purpose-built facilities designed to support high-quality teaching and learning, reflecting the Trust’s long-term commitment to investing in the young people of Stoke.
