Eric Craven was a teacher in special schools. He also taught the Open University’s course ‘Learning for All’ for 14 years. He became a headteacher of three schools. He worked in school improvement for two local authorities before becoming one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Schools in Ofsted’s school improvement division. He was promoted to managing inspector and became Ofsted’s national operational lead for special schools and pupil referral units. He authored national reports on attendance in secondary schools and on exclusions. Since leaving Ofsted in 2011 he has continued to work on school improvement as a consultant.
